The Beginning
On 17 September 1929, a new theatre group was formed by 17 members, keen to pursue their dramatic interests. They called themselves the Ealing Junior Arts Club (Dramatic Section), but The Ealing Arts Club objected so a new name had to be found. In a Soho restaurant one Sunday in November 1929, Alec Payne (the group’s first director) suggested “The Questors”.
The group’s first production, The Best People, was performed at the Park Theatre in Hanwell, but precarious finances led them to the smaller venue of St Martin’s Hall in Acton. Searching for a more permanent base, they were put in touch with a local scout group operating out of a small, pre-fabricated “tin church” at Number 12, Mattock Lane.
