The Maids & Blood Sports

by Jean Genet & Richard Gallagher

A double-bill of emptiness and fantasy

The Maids

by Jean Genet

Whenever Madame is absent her maids Solange and Claire wear her clothes, apply her makeup and… fantasise about murdering her. They take turns playing their mistress and each other in their sadomasochistic role-play games. But this time their ritual is disturbed; this time they’re ready to do more than play.

Blood Sports

by Richard Gallagher

Nicola and Susan live together in squalor. Unemployed and uninspired they spend their days bickering and imagining fantastic conversations on behalf of their cat, Madame Defarge. Susan has spent most of her life on benefits. Nicola was once married, but has given up her slightly better prospects and her child to be with Susan.

Into this situation walks Alan, a stranger who claims he is Susan’s father. He might be trying to split them up. He might genuinely want to take Susan to a better life. He might not be genuine at all.
