A Midlife Migrant Crisis

by Mohammed Terwis

A satirical look at migration and asylum

A middle aged actor faces various mid-show crises as he realises that he is performing in front of a foreign audience, who can not speak his native language...

When you finally reach the camp at Calais, the euphoria soon evaporates. You come to realise that very little has changed. You are still afraid. Oppression and injustice still stalk you. Perhaps nature thinks there’s not enough suffering in Europe. Perhaps she chooses you to balance out the scales.

Mohammed Terwis explores the sensitive themes of migration and asylum. He takes aim at the societal dysfunction that drives people to flee their homes, and the societal insecurity that prolongs their suffering when they ostensibly reach a safe haven.

Please note: This production is performed in Arabic language, with English surtitles, so it is accessible for both English and Arabic speakers.

Mohammed Terwis is a Sudanese-Dutch actor and satirist. He is best known for his repertoire of satirical characters that expose the many contradictions at the heart of Sudanese society. In this one-man play, Mohammed Terwis uses humour to explore the sensitive themes of migration and asylum. Through keen observation and powerful allegory, he invites his audience to look again at what it really means to be a refugee in Europe.
