What will I get out of it?
Whether you’d like to learn the basic building blocks of musical improv or looking for a refresher this course will build your skills, confidence and toolkit, working right up to a performance for friends and family at the end or the course.
We’ll flex the final course content to adapt to your preference and experience but you can expect the course to cover:
- Duets, chorus scenes, group numbers, spoken narration with musical soundtrack
- A range of styles from musical theatre and cabaret, to blues, pop and rap.
- Musical improv warm ups and games
- And maybe even a few rap battles
Who is this workshop for?
Suitable for all levels of experience. Whether you’re just starting out or have years of performance behind you, this workshop offers something fresh and valuable.
You’ll build the skills to:
• Improvise songs in character and in the moment
• Transition fluidly from scene into song
• Listen to your fellow performers and the pianist
• Learn the basic constructs of songs, including verses, bridges, cracking choruses and finding the key change
• Build a toolkit of simple tricks and stage crafting to use the space like a musical theatre pro
Who teaches this course?
Julia:
Is an improviser and experienced musical improv workshop leader. She’s passionate about improv and singing as tools for helping us play and embrace the joy of small risks and the fun of failing with gusto…
Julia performs improv regularly and has also appeared in the Questors Variety Show with her one-woman (and 3 rubber chickens) improvised Shakespearean Chicken Theatre Company.
Storm:
Is experienced in improvising music and accompanying Julia’s musical improv comedy workshops. As well as classical and jazz piano, Storm plays percussion, viola and guitar.
Becky:
Is an improv performer, workshop leader and team coach. She draws on training with Hoopla, The Free Association, The Maydays, AndAlso and Showstopper! And physical theatre skills drawn from groups such as Punchdrunk and Frantic Assembly. She also applies these techniques in training and corporate facilitation.
Becky is a director at The Questors, where she also acts in scripted plays, with roles in My Fair Lady, A Midsummer Night's Dream and God of Carnage as well as in devised performances.
