Improvisation

Improvisation: Comedy & Drama

'When we woke up this morning, nobody handed us a script for the day... we just improvised our way through it, so you know what, you can already improvise’.

We have 2 levels to choose from:

LEVEL 1 - Introduction to Comedy Improv
Here, you will gently be introduced and supported in both the comedic SHORTFORM exercises, as seen in ‘Whose line is it anyway’, and the more naturalistic LONGFORM formats of improvisation, as performed by Mike Myers, Steve Carell and Tina Fey.

We will practice lots of games and exercises in pairs and in groups, and find a lot of humour both intended, and not intended! We will learn techniques to help us think on the spot without going completely blank, remember names, create grounded scenes in every imaginable location, create believable relationships and have meaningful dialogues… and let’s not forget having some pretty absurd ones too! We will also practice ‘getting things wrong’, and discovering that when things don’t go to plan, the world doesn’t stop turning… getting things wrong is a fundamental element of comedy.

Conquering this fear of getting things wrong has a huge liberating effect, and this is not limited to the classroom… it spills over into everyday life, and the everyday stresses and surprises that life throws at us will not seem quite as daunting.

Who is the Level 1 course for?
Everyone… beginners, actors, non-actor… and you don’t have to be clever, fast or funny.

If you want to:

•    Gain confidence to speak up socially and professionally and conquer that anxiety.
•    Or enhance your acting by ‘living in the moment’ and liberating your creativity.
•    Or if you’ve done some Improv, but are feeling rusty.
•    Or just want to meet-up with a bunch of people on a Saturday afternoon and share some laughs having fun.

Then this course is for YOU!

There will also be the option to perform in a showcase to friends and family at the end of the final class.

LEVEL 2
- Intermediate Improv
This is the next step, and anyone who’s done level 1, or already knows the basic ‘rules’ of Improv: ‘Yes, and…’ etc., is most welcome. Utilising these skills, we will find more humour, more drama, and more emotionally charged scenes and formats including:
•    How to discover unusual points of view.
•    Peas in a Pod.
•    To find the game in scenes.
•    To map emotionally charged scenes in trivial situations.
•    Group game formats such as Product Launch.
•    New shortform formats such as Slideshow.
•    New Longform formats such as La Ronde.
There will also be the option to perform in a showcase to friends and family at the end of the final class.

Who teaches these courses?

Ant Griffith is tutor for both levels. He completed Questor's Foundation and Advanced Performance courses as well as graduating in Foundations of Acting at Mountview Drama School. He has studied improvisation at The Free Association, Hoopla, The Nursery and The Maydays under Suki Webster, Josie Lawrence, Katy Schutte & Maria Peters, and is the founder and tutor of the Questors home improv team The Slack Captains. He is also a musician and songwriter, with several songs in the movie 'The Girl with a Clock for a Heart' directed by Daniel Barber, currently in pre-production.
