New Writing Festivals

Springboard The Criterion
Why stage a New Writing Festival?

Presented by - Andrew Sharpe, The Criterion Festival; Becky Hartnup, The Questors Theatre, and possibly a n other.

An opportunity to hear how two, and possibly three theatres went about it, the lessons learned and what they got out of it.

Andrew notes that the soul of a festival, for both audience and creatives, is more than just a collection of performances. The art is in the making, and begins with the concepts, well before the first draft.

A festival is a story, a prayer song of power, an artistic statement in its own right, that inspires and changes and renews and believes and loves and opens doors and supports and understand and develops and showcases and above all, forms a congregation and community that transcends the sum of its  parts.

The Criterion held the Springboard Festival: three acts a night over eight days. Produced from a standing start just, before Christmas 2022, in three months, by a playwright with no production experience, featuring new writing, collaborations and art inspired by art. With a narrative driven by the Criterion’s reflective statement. To paraphrase; a predominantly white, middle class, and privileged theatre, has an obligation to use its agency to encourage diversity and social change.

The Questors held a Festival of New Writing 18 - 23 July 2022 with a mixture of full-lenghth short and very short plays in two spaces. Described as "an explosion of creative talent for audiences, writers and theatre-makers, and our local community. Step into our thriving theatre to watch world premieres in our air conditioned Studio Theatre, celebrate new voices, expand your creativity at our workshops with industry professionals and discuss your ideas in our multi-award-winning Grapevine bar."
