Alan was moved to write about the many standing ovations he has received on The Questors stage over the years, but felt that Messrs Green and McQueen might be jealous! Instead he is sharing a slightly less than golden moment with us.
In 1965 we hosted a meeting of the Little Theatre Guild. Alfred had bullied me into undertaking the catering although I was working in Switzerland.
As this was the first time any of the delegates would have seen the new theatre, we had prepared the most sumptuous after-show supper (John West salmon and asparagus spears out of a tin just to illustrate what ‘sumptuous’ meant in those days).
The delegates spent so long marvelling at the place (Alfred was personally showing them round) that when they arrived in the Stan Room, Questors members, who had paid half a crown for supper, had eaten everything except a few cheese sandwiches. I’m not sure how many believed my explanation that a few old members had got themselves bricked up in the foundations of the old theatre and only came out when there was food around.
We made up for it next day by serving delegates with lunch where they sat.
